We are more than just a take out shop – our market is dedicated to providing imported and domestic cheeses and pâtés, coffees, deli meats, fresh salads and a wide selection of specialty gourmet foods such RWB pasta, olive and other oils, vinegars, mustards, spices and ethnic foods. We recognize that people eat differently today – we will seek to offer more organic, vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based alternatives. Coho’s will strive to meet the changing eating habits of our customers. We also stock those day to day essential items that are a must-have in every household. Avoid the traffic, shop local and save your time for the beach or other fun activities.
Why Coho?
Coho's original owners were Rick Coho Hardy and Dave Lyons. Rick was named by his father whose love of the outdoors and fishing earned Rick his unique middle name. When they were preparing to open a business, they were looking for something personal that connected them to the community they would serve and “Coho” fit the bill. To this day, Rick still shares his passion for fishing and the outdoors. On December 31, 2021, when Mark Hunker and Jeff McCracken added Coho's to their family of restaurants (Eden, JAM Bistro, Red, White, and Basil, Duplex Diner), they retained the name in honor of their long time friends.
Did you know?
Coho salmon has rich, reddish-orange meat and has been called one of the best-tasting salmon. Although coho costs less than king and sockeye salmon, its quality is still quite high. Coho are a medium fatty salmon that have nearly two times the oil content of pink and chum salmon, but less than sockeyes or kings. Coho salmon are available primarily headed and gutted, in fillets both frozen and fresh in season from July to October.
About Us
As friends for 28 years and business partners for 19, we have built a group of establishments that are all about good friends, good food, good drinks, and good fun.
Our friendship began in 1996 when we met at a poker game hosted by a mutual friend. That friendship eventually led to us purchasing a beach house together in 2001. One of our favorite restaurants in Rehoboth Beach was Eden, originally located on Rehoboth Avenue. When the owners of Eden decided to sell in 2005, our favorite server at Eden, who happened to be a realtor, got in touch on a whim to see if we’d be interested. (She knew that Mark had a life-long dream of being a restaurateur.) The rest, as they say, is history.
As time went by, we were thinking about new restaurant ideas and decided on a more casual bistro-style place. JAM was born in 2010, originally housed in the basement of the Clear Space Theater, across the street from Eden. When the former Camel's Hump space next to Eden became available, we jumped at the chance to be East of Eden. In Spring 2023, we relocated JAM to 210 Second Street to space that includes a fantastic roof deck that's a great scene throughout the warmer months. (Fun fact: JAM was named for Jeff And Mark.)
When not in Rehoboth, we would spend an inordinate amount of our free time at Duplex Diner in Washington, DC. When the opportunity presented itself in 2014, we decided it made a lot of sense to just own the place where we spent most of our time and we opened our first business in DC. We decided to expand our holdings in DC in 2018 when we purchased Red, White and Basil, just around the corner from Duplex.
Fast forward to 2020 and suddenly the world was a different place for the restaurant business. Jeff had permanently relocated to Rehoboth pre-pandemic and Mark and his family did the same when the pandemic hit. We shut down RWB, but maintained the rights to the business. Meanwhile, our long-time friends Rick Hardy and Dave Lyons were fulfilling their own dream of opening a business, taking over the old Grub Grocery on Rehoboth Avenue and turning it into Coho's Market. Ironically, Coho's Market was the perfect business to open during the pandemic with its great selection of to-go foods and outdoor seating.
After two years of non-stop work, Rick and Dave decided they were ready for something else, and as had happened with the previous owners of Eden and Duplex, they thought "maybe McCracken and Hunker want to add a market to their growing empire." Turns out, we did and we took over Coho’s at the end of 2021.
As the pandemic waned in 2022 and businesses got back to “normal”, we decided it was time to resurrect RWB and found a great location on Route 1, just across from Rehoboth Avenue, giving us a presence at the gateway to the beach town where we used to spend our summers but now call home.
We love being a part of this community and providing so many options for fun, food, and drink to our family, friends, neighbors, and visitors. We look forward to seeing you soon!
